Why did I become a wedding photographer?

There was something that I like about photography at a young age. Did the subject and papers during High School and University. It has always been something I really enjoyed, but also didn’t really understand as the camera itself was rather technical the output I see elsewhere just weren’t the same to the photo’s I take and to explore further I knew I would have to spend a lot of money and at that time I didn’t have. Buying photography equipment was expensive and still is today.

My photography journal started once I had a secured job and had saved enough to purchase a camera the kit lens took it out on a date with my partner to Wellington Zoo, took all kind of photo’s from animals to a portrait session of my partner. Once I got home I transferred the photo’s on my computer and all of a sudden I became somewhat hooked and wanted to explore further into photography. This period is where I was like a kid wanting candies, saving all I could for photography gear to help me explore further into this unknown photography realm, went from using my partner as portraits, going out to beaches to capture sunsets, going out in the cold to capture the beautiful night sky and going to the CBD to walk around capturing anything from anything I find interesting, this type of genre is called street photography and it’s what I enjoyed the most as it was challenging and is where I learnt a lot about photography, from lighting, to composition and story telling.

I have never thought about wedding photography at all until my friend has asked me to shoot with him for a wedding, both of us had never done one and it was exciting but also quite nervous with it. This was then I realise I had potential to capture weddings, for me it really relates to street photography that I have spent and enormous time investing in and it is to be creative in a non controllable environment. I have decided to go with this path as a side hustle building it overtime. This was the hardest bit for every creative wanting to live on doing what they do is the business side of things, we are obviously creatives and business side of things are usually something we’re clueless about. It was something I was willing to learn and experiment if I was to do this for a living. My goal was to have a job where I enjoy and the freedom without needing to be at a office 8 hours a day for 5 days a week as I have long realised I’m just not that type of person.

My goal as a wedding photographer is to wow my couples as appreciation means a lot to me.
